The Education Market

The Kensington Group (TKG) manages one of the largest on-going surveys and databases for independent schools in the United States.

Independent Schools

TKG had a relationship with Independent Schools for many years before it gained significant momentum in 1994. In that year Chris Everett, working in conjunction with then ISACS (Independent Schools Association of Central States) President and current NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) President Pat Bassett, developed a measurement program to help independent schools conduct a self-study accreditation and/or strategic planning process. This initial survey eventually evolved into a scan survey in 2000 and a customizable e-survey in 2004.

The ISACS School Community Survey is the largest on-going independent school survey and database in the country. This program currently involves more than 325 independent schools in 15 central states and beyond. The database contains more than 150,000 surveys that serve as a benchmark for school performance evaluation. Some schools currently use this survey to monitor administration and school performance on an annual basis.

In addition to this formal evaluation program, The Kensington Group works with schools to better understand the impacts of their environment, market, admissions and communications processes via a group of research tools that include:

  • Former Parent (understanding the true reason families leave a school)
  • School Colors (learning how the community views a school)
  • Making the Grade (staying on the leading edge of admissions)

The relationship with ISACS extends to a series of workshops that are conducted twice a year for schools that are considering conducting market research. Workshops are conducted at the Annual Fall ISACS Conference and again for a full day in the Spring at the ISACS office in Chicago.

Charter Schools

The experience with independent schools led to an opportunity for TKG to design a similar assessment survey for Ball State University Charter Schools. Ball State is one of only a few institutions in Indiana to authorize charter schools. A variety of surveys were designed and evaluated before the current program was adopted. The resulting program has been in place for nearly five years and currently involves 32 charter schools throughout the state. The program aids understanding of how parents and faculty view a specific charter school while also providing a comparative benchmark to previous data on that school and similar schools within the Ball State University system.

College and Universities

TKG has conducted various types of research for, or in conjunction with, a variety of colleges and universities throughout the United States. These projects were often custom designed to meet specific investigative goals and market objectives. This research involved everything from communications goals and new market offerings, to supporting specific medical research findings. Current and past client institutions include:

Ball State University
Indiana University
Marian University
University of Arizona
University of Iowa
University of Oklahoma
University of San Francisco
University of Texas, Austin
